Arnegard School History

The Arnegard School isn’t just a structure — it’s a living archive of the town’s history, resilience, and pride.
It has seen generations of students, community dances, basketball victories, and countless memories.

We want to restore it with your help and support to ensure that symbol of the city does not get lost!

Here is the history of the site:

  • Origins: Arnegard founded in 1906, named for Evan Arnegard. Railroad arrival in 1913.
  • 1914–1915: Original one-story, four-room schoolhouse constructed.
  • 1936 expansion: Second story, rear annex, library, gym, additional classrooms.
  • 1954 update: Annex torn down, replaced with a larger gym.
  • 1961 victory: State Class C Boys’ Basketball Championship.
  • 1963–1976: High school closure; later only elementary until 1976.
  • After use: Roller rink, library, meeting hall.
  • 1980s: Building closed due to safety issues.
  • 1998 renovation: Milton Hanson restores building into “Old School Bed & Breakfast.”
  • 2015 renovation
  • Media exposure: Featured on HGTV’s If Walls Could Talk and Prairie Public TV.

By restoring it, we will:

  • Preserve a piece of North Dakota history
  • Create a community gathering space
  • Promote local tourism and education
  • Honor the legacy of those who built and sustained this town for over a century
  • Structural aging, water damage, code compliance, accessibility.
  • Urgent repairs needed to prevent further decay.
  • Opportunity: breathe new life into the building as a community hub, museum, event venue.
  • Cultural & educational value: history, architecture, pride for local residents.
